Hindmarsh Venture Capital Funds

Investing at inception

John Hindmarsh founded Hindmarsh Construction over 40 years ago in Canberra and has been building businesses ever since. Now run by the next generation, Hindmarsh is a mid-tier builder and developer that operates in Canberra, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane with over 200 staff. It has a proud history of constructing complex buildings, notably for universities and national research centres and has been an instrumental partner in shaping the physical environment at the ANU for over a decade.

The Hindmarsh family office has been investing in Canberra region start-up businesses since 2000, through several funds managed by its venture capital arm, Australian Capital Ventures Limited (“ACVL”).

Run by John Hindmarsh, Steve Hardy and Michele Troni, ACVL has brought together a number of private investors in Canberra and has focused on supporting cutting-edge innovation out of the Canberra institutions, including ANU, UNSW at ADFA and CSIRO.

Since inception, ACVL has invested $20.5m in 17 pre-seed and seed ventures and managed several exits. The last fund managed by ACVL was a joint venture between Hindmarsh and the ACT Government, which is currently in divestment phase and which in its last 10 years achieved returns of 3.0X over its investments. ACVL has provided very early support to several Canberra success stories, including:
